Helmuth Hubner is one of the most amazing examples of Patriotism. He lived at a time where evil was considered good. He started out in Hitler Youth just like any other German boy, but he thought for himself. He saw what was going on and he knew it wasn't right. He then began to print anti Nazi leaflets and distributed them around his community. He did this with two of his friends, Rudolph Wobbe and Karl-Heinz Schnibbe. All of these boys understood that if they were caught the consequences would be terrible. They were eventually caught and Helmuth took full responsibility and was beheaded for his so called crimes. Karl and Rudolph were sent to concentration camps, and they both made it out alive after the war. It is just amazing that a 17 year old boy would be willing to risk so much for his country. Which leads me to this question. What would I be willing to do for my country?
I remember when I was younger, Karl Schnibbe came and spoke at my school. He had my full attention and meeting someone who was actually there and lived at that time was just so amazing to me! That time in history that no one can really seem to grasp or understand was actually witnessed by the man I sat there and listened to. I remember him talking about his friend Helmuth and how selfless he was, and how when they were captured by the gestapo he kept his promise of not telling them who else was involved. Meeting Karl is something I will never forget. If you want to learn more about these amazing heroes I highly recommend the documentary, Truth and Conviction. Then you can hear Karl tell the same story he told my class. America needs heroes like this today. Lets take a lesson from them and have courage to be aware of what is going on in our world, and to stand up for our rights.
